The second episode of The Real History of Science Fiction, Space included looking at Firefly with comments from Nathan Fillion. Also comments from Adam Rogers.
Fillion says there was no grand purpose for the Firefly crew. The Firefly crew gets on what needs to be done. Fillion also says it presents situation that did not look alien to the audience. That was certainly reflected by the fact that Firefly never featured any aliens or to be more precise non-humans in it. In his concluding remarks on Firefly, presenter Mark Gatiss presented a future that is realistic. This assessment I am agreeable with since Firefly was really more like speculative fiction series than a sci fi series.
