Yesterday bought Upstairs, Downstairs season 1. I have seen most of it when it was on Ovation in 2000 all of which are colour as it did not show the ones that exist only in black and white. Hence why I bought the season 1 DVD release. As I have seen all of the subsequent seasons I am not planning on buying the DVD releases of them. However I am hoping to get the spin-off Thomas & Sarah one day.
Upstairs, Downstairs was created by Jean Marsh and Eileen Atkins with Jean playing Rose.

I have finally seen the black and white episodes. My viewing of Upstairs, Downstairs is complete and the black and white episodes were well worth the wait.

Upstairs, Downstairs makes a return in a new version next year: www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/6284582/Upstairs-Downstairs-returns-to-BBC.html#It will take place in 1936 six years after the end of the original series. Co-creator Jean Marsh will reprise her role as Rose now the housekeeper at 165 Eaton Place. It looks like fellow co-creator Dame Eileen Atkins will finally get to appear in her creation as the lady upstairs. The role of Sarah in the original series although taken by Pauline Collins was originally intended for Dame Eileen. The new version which begins as two feature length episodes will be written by Heidi Thomas. Thomas is also executive producer along with BBC Head of Drama, Wales and Doctor Who Executive Producer Piers Wenger. They will be shown on BBC One in late 2010 with the possibility of a full series in 2011.

The Fledgling: Season 6 opener. Originally broadcast on Boxing Day 2010, it is the first new episode since 1975. Produced by Nikki Wilson and directed by Euros Lyn. One of the executive producers was Piers Wenger. Although there is a 35 year gap between the previous episode and this one, The Fledgling takes place in 1936 six years after the season 5 finale Whither Shall I Wander. As well as starring series co-creator Jean Marsh reprising her role as Rose Buck, fellow series co-creator Eileen Atkins finally appears in the series as Maud, Lady Holland. The new lady of the house is Lady Agnes Holland played by Keeley Hawes. For Keeley Hawes she once again travels back in time after her stint in Ashes to Ashes. Also featuring Anne Reid and Art Malik. Rose mentions that her former master Lord Richard Bellamy is dead. The actor who played him David Langton had indeed passed away in 1994. So if season 6 had been made in 1981, six years in real time after the season 5, Langton would have been able to reprise his role as Lord Bellamy. The Fledgling includes a depiction of Wallis Simpson. Coincidentally I am currently watching the Edward and Mrs Simpson mini-series. Even though Upstairs, Downstairs season 6 and Edward and Mrs Simpson both took place in 1936, the actor who plays Wallis Simpson here Emma Clifford looks more youthful than Cynthia Harris who played her in Edward and Mrs Simpson. In fact Cynthia Harris was 44 when she played Wallis Simpson while Emma Clifford seems to be in her twenties. Another thing that Upstairs, Downstairs season 6 has in common with Edward and Mrs Simpson is the depiction of future Prime Minister Anthony Eden. Funny how the staff got rid of the Nazi from the party. A very good welcome back to 165 Eaton Place.

The Ladybird: Penultimate episode of season 6. Directed by Euros Lyn. There is a fashion show and Jean Marsh and Eileen Atkins are familiar with fashion shows as they had also created The House of Eliott. Quite shocking when Harry came downstairs wearing a Fascist uniform. Also disappointing Lady Persie being duped into Fascism. A terrible tragedy with Rachel’s death.

The Cuckoo: Season 6 finale. Features the depiction of Edward VIII’s abdication. As I mentioned before I am concurrently watching the Edward and Mrs Simpson mini-series and in that series I am up to the point when Edward VIII had decided to abdicate. Glad that Harry seems to have changed his tune on Fascism but disturbing Lady Persie describing herself as a National Socialist. Moving scene when Sir Hallam was reunited with his sister. Pretty good last scene marking the end of the episode and the sixth season.

Some time ago I finished watching the spin-off Thomas & Sarah originally shown in 1979: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_and_SarahOf the two characters I thought the series worked quite well for Sarah as played by Pauline Collins. Especially with her not in the constricted environment of 165 Eaton Place in Upstairs, Downstairs anyone she sure isn’t afraid to voice her opinions on the subject at hand as she and Thomas travel to various places throughout the course of the series. Thomas & Sarah lasted for 13 episodes and unfortunately it ended on a cliffhanger. A second season had been commissioned but a strike at the time resulted in the second season never coming to fruition. Perhaps the new series of Upstairs, Downstairs would address what became of Thomas and Sarah since the events of the spin-off.

From The Doctor Who News Page: Alex Kingston (River Song in Doctor Who) will be joining the cast of Upstairs, Downstairs from its seventh season. Her character is called Blanche Mottershed and has been described as "a free-thinking and outspoken archaeologist who smokes cheroots and who is fond of a 'little light nudism'".
Meanwhile mere months after its Australian TV debut on UKTV, season 6 will finally be on the ABC in December.
